The life and legacy of Daniel Osàcar, former CDC treasurer

by PREMIUM.CAT

A veteran of Catalan politics

Daniel Osàcar, ex-treasurer of Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC), has died at the age of 89, as reported by his lawyer, Xavier Melero, in an interview with RAC1 and confirmed by premium.cat. Osàcar, a member of Jordi Pujol’s old guard, left his positions in the party on December 13, 2010, after CiU’s victory in the parliamentary elections.

A long-awaited goodbye

Osàcar’s resignation was an already planned decision, as confirmed by Artur Mas in statements: “I wanted to retire for a long time.” The ex-treasurer, in charge of CDC’s financial management since 2005, was a key figure in the party until his last days.

A controversial chapter

His involvement in the Palau case led Osàcar to be sentenced to 3 and a half years in prison for irregular funding of CDC, after the original sentence of 4 years and five months was reduced by the Spanish Supreme Court. Despite this, the 3% case is still open to the Spanish Court.

A legacy in question

Investigated since 2014 for the 3% case, Osàcar has died without the trial being closed. With its assets seized and amid accusations of irregular funding, its role in the history of CDC remains in a constant debate about democratic transparency in Catalonia.
