The Los Llanos de Aridane City Council seeks to review aid to farmers
The plenary session of the Los Llanos de Aridane City Council has unanimously approved a motion presented by the Socialist Group to review the criteria for distributing aid to farmers affected by the volcanic eruption. The proposal seeks to compensate for income losses suffered by farmers due to the destruction of their crops.
Positive response from the municipal government
The spokesperson for the Socialist Group, Alicia Vanoostende, thanked the municipal government for its support for this proposal. According to Vanoostende, this measure will allow the City Council to defend the interests of Valley farmers, who were affected by an aid decree considered unfair.
Criticism of current aid
The socialist councilor regretted that the aid arrived late and was not enough to compensate for the farmers’ losses. In addition, she pointed out that aid to those directly affected was significantly reduced, which generated indignation and uncertainty in the agricultural sector.
Proposal of the socialists
The proposal presented by the Socialist Group seeks to compensate for income losses in 2023 using the same formula used the previous year. To do this, it is proposed to use the data provided by producer organizations and have the assessment of an external and independent entity such as Agroseguros. This proposal seeks to correct the system used by the Government of the Canary Islands, which has generated indignation and uncertainty among farmers.
