The goal of a progressive government
Jaume Collboni, mayor of Barcelona, has reiterated his intention to reach a government agreement that will allow establishing a ‘progressive majority’ before the arrival of summer. In his statements on Catalunya Ràdio, he emphasized that this pact will be carried out with a specific focus on Barcelona, highlighting his firm support for the city’s political autonomy.
Collboni has positively assessed the electoral results of May 12 in Catalonia, especially in Barcelona, interpreting the votes for the PSC as support for the actions of the government led by Pedro Sánchez in Madrid, and as an indication that the Catalans have chosen to ‘ turn the page to the process’.
Search for a progressive pact
The mayor has stated that from the beginning he has advocated reaching an agreement to form a progressive government in the city. He has expressed his hope of receiving a positive response in the coming weeks, or before the summer, to set up this government. Although he has noted that Barcelona currently has a government, mayor and budget, his goal is to achieve a broader government that addresses the city’s main needs, such as access to housing.
Collboni has highlighted the resounding victory of the socialists in the elections to the Parliament of Catalonia, considering it as a mandate to form a solid government in Catalonia through conversations with all political forces. Regarding Carles Puigdemont’s decision to run for office, he has pointed out that there is no pro-independence majority in the Parliament.
Future perspectives
The mayor has been convinced that the talks can come to a successful conclusion, and has highlighted that Catalans have voted for progressive change. Although the socialists, led by Salvador Illa, have obtained a resounding victory, the independence movement does not have an absolute majority, which makes it necessary to form a tripartite party to achieve said majority.
In conclusion, the political scene in Barcelona points towards the search for a progressive government that addresses the needs of the city, in a context where the electoral results have marked a significant change in the political direction of Catalonia.
