A milestone in the history of Collserola

The Pi d’en Xandri in Sant Cugat del Vallès turns 250 years old in 2024, becoming an emblematic symbol of the area. To commemorate this anniversary, the Sant Cugat City Council has asked the Generalitat to declare it a Monumental Tree of Catalonia, since for some years it has already held the title of Tree of Local and Regional Interest. The mayor, Josep Maria Vallès, has announced that there is already a favorable report that supports this statement. Vallès highlights the importance of this designation for the inhabitants of Sant Cugat, as it represents resistance, perseverance and respect for the environment.

The 1997 attack

The Pi d’En Xandri was planted in 1774 to mark the limits of the land of a family in the municipality. However, in 1997, this tree became the victim of an attack. During the early hours of February 2 of that year, someone attempted to cut him down and burn him, leaving him with serious injuries from which he is still recovering. This unsolved incident has made the pine tree a symbol of the municipality.

The propped tree

Since that attack, the Pi d’en Xandri has been shored up and reviewed annually by forestry technicians to evaluate its condition. Jordi Torrijos, former head of the City Council’s Parks and Gardens Service, assures that the evolution of the tree has been positive. The pine has created closure and healing tissue to close its wounds, demonstrating its capacity for resistance and growth. Although it still needs time to heal completely, the tree is expected to live several more years, since pine trees can live between 400 and 450 years.

Current challenges

In addition to recovering from injuries suffered in 1997, Pi d’en Xandri is also facing the challenge of drought. To maintain humidity and promote biodiversity, maintenance measures have been implemented, such as pouring crushed bark at the base of the tree. Irrigation work has also been carried out to moisten the subsoil due to the lack of rain. Despite the years of drought, the pine has managed to maintain itself, although its growth has been slower. Currently, the tree is approximately 23 meters high, with a trunk diameter of 3.20 meters and a crown 21 meters wide. Despite the challenges, it is hoped that the Pi d’en Xandri will continue to be a symbol of resistance and beauty in Collserola.

celebrating the anniversary

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Pi d’en Xandri, various events have been organized throughout the year. The first event, which included the participation of students from the Escola Pi d’en Xandri, marked the beginning of the celebrations. These commemorative events will last until the month of October, paying tribute to the history and importance of this iconic tree (https://www.duplichecker.com/es/article-rewriter.php).
