The countdown to an investiture or election

The political situation in Catalonia is at a crucial moment, with the possibility of an investiture or the calling of elections in the next two months. This uncertainty has led the Junts party to work to obtain a majority of support that will facilitate the investiture of the president-in-exile, Carles Puigdemont, and put pressure on the PSC and its decision.

The decision of the socialists

In an interview with SER Catalunya, the vice-president of Junts, Josep Rius, has pointed out that the decision to collapse the investiture or call elections rests with Salvador Illa, leader of the PSC. Junts is ready for any scenario and ensures that a possible repeat election would not be a problem for the party.

Conversations with other pro-independence parties

Junts is in discreet talks with the other two pro-independence parties in the Parliament of Catalonia, the ERC and the CUP. They are confident of being able to add the support of these formations and assure that they can add between 55 and 59 seats, a figure higher than the sum of the PSC and the Commons.

The support of ERC

To get ERC support, Junts defends proposals related to financing, self-determination and language. They consider that these conditions may be more favorable for Puigdemont’s investiture than for Illa’s. Rius has criticized the PSC leader for the lack of resources allocated to Catalonia.

The current situation

The political situation in Catalonia is complex and uncertain, with different political forces seeking their space and negotiating possible agreements. The coming weeks will be decisive in determining whether there will be an investiture or early elections. It will be necessary to be attentive to the movements and decisions of the different parties to understand the political future of Catalonia.
