Improvement in vaccine coverage

Starting this Thursday, the quadrivalent vaccine against meningitis A, C, Y and W will be free in Extremadura for babies who turn 4 and 12 months this year. This measure will mean a saving of 110 euros per son or daughter for families and will contribute to improving vaccination coverage for minors. Until now, it was only administered to 60% of the target population.

Extension of protection

In the region, the group C meningitis vaccine was administered free of charge at 4 and 12 months. However, families who wanted to protect their babies against serotypes A, W and Y had to pay 55 euros for each of the two necessary doses. With the inclusion of the quadrivalent vaccine in the vaccination schedule, it is estimated that 7,000 babies can be immunized this year, with an investment of 770,000 euros.

A crucial advance in public health

The Minister of Health, Sara García, considers that this measure represents a great advance in the vaccination strategy and a crucial step in public health. Until now, only 60% of families purchased the quadrivalent vaccine due to its cost. With the vaccine being free, it is expected to significantly increase vaccination coverage in the region.

Expansion of vaccination

In addition to the meningitis vaccine, the counselor announced the expansion of vaccination against shingles. Starting this Thursday, the vaccine will be administered free of charge to people who turn 80 during 2024. This measure is implemented following the recommendations of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System.

Success in vaccination against bronchiolitis

The counselor also highlighted the resounding success of vaccination against bronchiolitis in babies. After the administration of 4,750 doses, a vaccination rate of 98% has been achieved. So far, no adverse effects have been reported, confirming the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine.

Possible extension of free

When asked if the rotavirus vaccine is also considered free of charge, the counselor mentioned that its incorporation in future years is being evaluated. However, the current priority has been protection against meningitis due to the severity of this disease.
