A territory full of surprises
The Ribera d’Ebre, located in the Terres de l’Ebre, is a region that surprises with its diversity. It extends over 40 kilometers, with 17 villages grouped in 14 municipalities, and houses a population of 23,867 inhabitants. Móra d’Ebre is its capital, but other localities such as Miravet or Riba-roja d’Ebre are perfect for escapades, while Ascó and Flix, with their nuclear power plants, mark the landscape.
A GDP that makes talking
In recent years, the Ribera d’Ebre has gained notoriety as the region with the highest GDP per capita in Catalonia, with an impressive 61,419 euros. This data, provided by the Institute of Statistics of Catalonia (Idescat), is used as a thermometer of the economic potential and the quality of life of the region. Surprisingly, this indicator surpasses that of Barcelonès and La Segarra, two territories that, at first glance, seem to have a greater economic weight.
The importance of GDP per capita
Experts such as engineer Xavier Roig warn that GDP growth is not always a good sign. He emphasizes that if GDP per capita one year is less than previous years, it means that the population has grown more than the economy, resulting in less resources per person. Thus, the use of per capita GDP is essential to really understand the economic health of a region.
Industries that make the difference
The Ribera d’Ebre stands out for its industrial activity, with 71.2% of its dirty added value (GVA) from the industry. This is significantly higher than the average weight of the industry in Catalonia, which is around 20%. The temporality rate is 10.6%, with salaries that exceed 19 euros per hour, reflecting a higher work quality.
The power of energy
Energy is the main engine of the industry in the Ribera d’Ebre. With seven industrial estates in Ascó, Flix, Móra d’Ebre and Mora la Nova, the region is the home of the Ascó nuclear power plant, which generates 35% of the electricity of Catalonia. Recently, this power station has received an extension to continue operating until 2031, guaranteeing thousands of jobs and an essential source of energy.
Compare with other counties
Barcelonès, with a per capita GDP of 38,911 euros, is one of the great economic poles of Catalonia, representing 55% of Catalan GDP. Its metropolitan area is an appeal to investors thanks to its infrastructure and talent. On the other hand, La Segarra, with a GDP per capita of 39,620 euros, stands out for its food industry, led by Bonarea, and for its agricultural tradition.
A promising future
With its rich industrial inheritance and its ability to adapt to new energy needs, the Ribera d’Ebre is presented as an example of sustainable economic growth. The opportunities for innovation and investment are immense, and their potential for being a leader in the economic development of Catalonia is indisputable.
