A Summer Marked by Obligations
This summer, the Spanish royal family faces an unusual schedule, disrupted by commitments that make a difference to their traditional visit to Marivent. While they would normally enjoy time together on the island, preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics have considerably reduced their stay.
Olympic Commitments
King Felipe VI arrived in Mallorca last Tuesday, but was quickly immersed in activities related to the global sporting event. After meeting with local authorities, he travelled to Paris to take part in a gala dinner organised by Emmanuel Macron, followed by his presence at the opening of the Olympic Games.
An Unexpected Family Dispersion
The atmosphere at Marivent is marked by a notable absence of shared family moments. After the arrival of the King and Queen on the island, Princesses Leonor and Sofia took a different course by travelling to Paris to attend various competitions, instead of joining their parents in the summer house.
Return to Marivent: A Postponed Meeting
The family will only meet on the island after their obligations in the French capital are over. This year, a brief reunion is expected, since Leonor’s commitments to the Military Academy, which begins in mid-August, limit the time available to enjoy together in Mallorca.
Residential Distribution in the Palace
Another novelty this summer is the organisation of the family residence in Marivent. Felipe VI and Letizia have chosen to live in different areas of the property, which marks a significant change in the usual family dynamic.
Separate Accommodations
While the King is staying at the main residence alongside Queen Emeritus Sofia, Letizia has selected Son Vent, another of the buildings on the property. This place, which provides total privacy and distance, includes a series of amenities designed for her comfort.
Speculations about the New Distribution
Felipe’s choice to stay with his mother has sparked speculation. Some observers suggest that it could be related to the health of Sofia’s sister, Irene of Greece, or even personal relationships between him and Letizia that may have led to this temporary separation.
A Different Summer for the Royal Family
With family holidays reduced and life together fragmented, this summer represents a unique phase for the royal family. The lack of joint travel and the varied activities reflect an adaptation to new realities, showing that even among royalty, obligations can upend deeply held traditions.
