The Rural Agents: Guardians of Wildlife in Catalonia

A year full of rescue

Each year, the Rural Agents of the Osona, Ripollès and Lluçanès counties are dedicated to rescuing about 150 wild animals. In the last five years, they have served a total of 731 animals, with a majority of cases coming from Osona. These rescues are essential for protecting native fauna.

Types of rescued animals

Among the most common species rescued are black falcons, snakes, aligots, sparrows and storks. Falcons, in particular, are migrating birds that often need help to raise the flight after falling to the ground.

Falcons: migrators in difficulty

Jaume Bosch, head of the Regional Area of Central Catalonia, explains that the Black Falciot has a physical design that hinders his flight when he is on the ground, which causes many citizens to need help.

The importance of snakes

Snakes, often misunderstood, seek refuge in houses during the summer. Bosch insists on their legal protection and the vital role they play in the ecosystem, feeding on small rodents.

Rescue of injured and orphaned animals

Rural Agents also face a significant number of injured animals, often due to hitting or shooting. In the case of orphaned animals, many young birds fall from their nests during the nesting season.

The call to citizen responsibility

Bosch warns that human intervention can be detrimental. Animal pups, such as roe deers, are often abandoned by mothers if they are manipulated by humans, because of their smell.

Recovery and reintroduction

Once rescued, the animals are transferred to recovery centers where they receive veterinary care. The ultimate goal is to reintroduce them to their natural habitat once they are recovered.

Facing invasive species

Rural Agents also fight the presence of invasive exotic species that can alter the local ecosystem. Animals such as Egyptian goose and Florida turtle are examples of wildlife that requires special management.

Preventive Measures for Wildlife

In addition to rescuing animals, Rural Agents do inspections to identify dangers such as transparent glass in sports facilities that represent a threat to birds.

Electrocution and run over

Electric towers are another danger as they cause high bird mortality. Rural agents work with electricity companies to implement security measures.

Tips for Citizenship

If they come across a wild animal, it is essential for citizens to touch it as little as possible and to contact Rural Agents to avoid more damage to the Creature.

A Commitment with the Wildlife

With one third of their actions dedicated to wildlife, Rural Agents are committed to preserving the natural balance of Catalonia, managing both the protected fauna and the invasive species.
