A manifesto to maintain tradition

During the Ordinary General Assembly of the Sant Jordi Association, which took place last May 30, a manifesto was presented in defense of the preservation of the identity of the balcony covers during the Moors and Christians festivities. This manifesto was signed by several personalities who have held important positions within the Association, such as artistic adviser, historical adviser or chronicler.

Concern about loss of identity

The manifesto expresses concern about the appearance of new designs and graphics on balcony covers during the holidays. According to the signatories, this proliferation of new designs significantly alters the rule established in 1901, which adopted the ‘Creu de Sant Jordi’ ornamentation for the balconies of city buildings. This rule has been accepted and consolidated over the years and is a symbol that identifies and distinguishes the decoration of the Festival’s scenography.

A call to preserve tradition

The manifesto asks the Board of the Association and the City Council to assess the advisability of regulating the use of the new designs in the balcony covers and to request the collaboration of the filaes, the partygoers and the public to in order to recover the traditional image of the rodabalcó with the Saint George’s Cross. This call for the preservation of tradition seeks to maintain the aesthetics of the Festival scene and preserve its traditional values.
