An accelerated transformation
The transformation of La Rambla has reached an important phase change. Instead of redeveloping in sections from sea to mountain, it is now being done in three different areas. First, work will be done on the sidewalk of the Gothic Quarter, then on the Raval sidewalk and finally on the Paseo Central. This change of plan aims to speed up the works and finish them ahead of schedule. Instead of 2030, they are now expected to be completed in 2027.
Changes in traffic regulation
To be able to carry out this transformation, a new traffic regulation has been implemented. Vehicles can no longer drive downhill. From Carrer Pelai onwards, informative panels and barriers have been installed to redirect traffic towards Plaça de Catalunya. However, some bicycles still ride down the central promenade, a situation that will need to be monitored closely.
Works and changes in circulation
The works have started on the sidewalk of the Gothic Quarter, which has been closed to traffic. The cars going in the sea-mountain direction now go up the corner of the Raval. Traffic lights have been changed and road markings have been painted to indicate the new direction of traffic. Crossings for vehicles have been enabled above the central promenade, regulated by traffic lights and the presence of the Urban Guard. However, this situation is temporary and vehicles are not expected to travel along the central promenade in the future.
Reactions and perspectives
During this work start day, the director general of BIMSA, Ricard Font, showed optimism and assured that everything is going well. It will be necessary to closely follow the progress of the works and the changes in circulation.
