The uncertain future of Tavascan ski resort

by PREMIUM.CAT

Seasonal closure and financial challenges

The ski season in Tavascan, located in the middle of the Pallars Sobirà, has come to an end this Sunday, leaving its reopening for next year. This station, municipal management, faces serious economic problems, as the City Council of Lladorre has announced its inability to deal with urgent expenses, including the repair of the Treatjaneu machine and the newspaper review scheduled for 2027.

Rescue and future of the tracks

In the face of this situation, the City Council considers the possibility of a rescue by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC). As for the Nordic ski slopes, the mayor said that they will remain operational next season, while this year the station has been active for a total of sixteen weeks.

Conversations between authorities

FGC President Carles Ruiz has met with the mayor to discuss possible solutions and have agreed soon to move forward in the search for a viable solution. The mayor has expressed his frustration, saying that they have been struggling for almost three decades to secure the future of the station and, without external support, their reopening is unlikely.

Social and economic impact of closing

The possible closure of the station would have serious consequences for the local economy. The mayor has warned that up to twenty jobs could be lost, a significant figure for a small valley like the Cardós Valley. He also emphasized that the loss of visitors, which amounted to 15,000 during the winter, would drastically affect the economy of the area.

Economic impact data

Studies indicate that for each euro spent at the station, between six and seven euros are generated in the local economy. Thus, the closure of Tavascan would not only affect the workers directly linked to the station, but would also harm the local businesses that depend on the influx of tourists.

FGC and support commitment

In the face of this critical situation, FGC has expressed its intention to contact the City of Lladorre to better understand the reality of the Pleta del Prat mountain station. The body has stated its support for Tavascan, as it does with other ski resorts, and has been determined to collaborate with the Government to find solutions that will allow its continuity.
