A Reflection on the Perception of Landscape Value
For some time, I have been pondering the question of why Sant Feliu and its surroundings seem to lack value, according to the general perception.
Our relationship with the landscape seems to be influenced by a perception of lesser importance, for no clear reason. This perception has led us to believe that we live in an area with little landscape and heritage value, and that actions to preserve and enhance its values are always overshadowed by other urban priorities.
A Saint Feliu with History and Transformation
The Sant Feliu I have known dates back to the 1980s, but conversations with people who lived in earlier times reveal a different past. They remember a Sant Feliu that was a summer resort, with a population that enjoyed the river and a charming urban core. This image contrasts with the current reality.
The transformation of the landscape occurred with the construction of infrastructures such as motorways, railways and urban expansion. In addition, the presence of uncontrolled industries negatively affected the river and natural environments. This changed the physiognomy of Sant Feliu, turning it into what it is today.
The Value of Landscape and Belonging
The loss of references and the transformation of the territory have contributed to the construction of standardized cities, without distinctive elements. This situation has diminished the feeling of belonging and allowed the destruction of spaces with historical and natural value.
The conservation of architectural and geological elements of heritage interest could culturally enrich cities. However, this practice is often sacrificed in the name of progress and urban development.
Beauty in Transformation
Despite everything, the current landscape of Sant Feliu still has an intrinsic beauty. The marks left by mining activity and geological phenomena have created unique shapes and reliefs, worthy of admiration. This landscape, despite its transformation, retains a value that goes beyond the merely economic.
Collective awareness of the importance and value of the landscape is essential to face the future with dignity and respect.
