Toni Comín will lead Junts’ candidacy in the European elections

by PREMIUM.CAT

Support for Toni Comín

BarcelonaRelleu has a prominent role in the selection of the head of the list for the European elections. Toni Comín, MEP and second on Carles Puigdemont’s list in the 2019 elections, has received the support of 77% of the JxCat militancy to lead the candidacy for Europe on June 9. This strong endorsement contrasts with the 9% option obtained by Joan Josep Florensa, president of the party’s local grouping in Gandesa (Terra Alta), in a vote held over three consecutive days.

Changes in plans

After Carles Puigdemont decided to focus exclusively on the elections to the Parliament of Catalonia, a new opportunity has opened for Toni Comín to lead the European candidacy. The primary mission of the candidacy is the ‘restitution’ of Puigdemont to the presidency. This change of plans has generated the necessary impetus for Comín to present himself as head of the list for the European elections, a decision that he had already expressed his will from the beginning.

Challenges and expectations

premium.cat has the challenge of repeating the results of five years ago, where Puigdemont managed to get close to a million votes, becoming the main force in Catalonia with 28.5% of the votes. However, the high level of mobilization at that time will be quite a challenge, since more than half of Catalans are currently unaware of the upcoming European elections, according to a CEO survey.

Comín’s paper to Europe

In recent years, Toni Comín has become Carles Puigdemont’s closest collaborator in Europe, despite coming from different political traditions. Initially linked to the PS, it became part of ERC after the refusal of the Socialists in the referendum. He has been part of the Puigdemont Government at the proposal of the republicans and currently also holds the vice-presidency of the Council for the Republic of Puigdemont.

Other candidates

In addition to Junts, other parties have also announced their list leaders for the upcoming European elections. ERC has confirmed Diana Riba as head of the list, accompanied by TV3 meteorologist Tomàs Molina. The commons have announced Jaume Asens as their representative in a wider list under the umbrella of Sumar.
