Millionaire compensation for the closure of tourist homes

The new regulation on housing for tourist use in the Girona regions could mean large compensation for the affected owners and managers. The Costa Brava-Pirineu de Girona Apartment Tourist Association (ATA) estimates that the figure could rise to 1.9 billion euros.

Intrusion, a scourge for tourism

The ATA warns that the new regulations could encourage intrusion in the tourism sector. The association denounces that the Government focuses on persecuting legal accommodation while ignoring illegal activity.

To combat this scourge, the ATA proposes the creation of a census of tourist housing licenses that allows identifying establishments that are not active or that do not declare their taxes.

The tourism sector, an economic engine

Despite the challenges, the tourism sector in Girona maintains positive prospects. Tourist rental apartments continue to be a highly sought-after option among visitors.

The president of the ATA, Esther Torrent, highlights the sector’s commitment to sustainability and the rational use of natural resources, including water.

Torrent demands that the Government take measures to support the tourism sector in the face of the drought and the need for infrastructure such as the interconnection between the Ebro and the Llobregat.

The weight of the tourism sector in the Catalan economy

The sector of tourist apartments and housing for tourist use has a significant weight in Catalonia, representing more than 50% of the tourist accommodation supply and generating employment for 30,000 people.

The ATA highlights the importance of supporting and protecting this sector, which contributes vitally to the local and regional economy.
