A new destination for an abandoned space
The old Mercadona location on the Vic de Manresa road, which closed its doors five years ago, is preparing for a new stage as a car park. With a planned capacity for 110 or 115 vehicles, this project, called Parking Gaudí, will open its doors in about two months.
History of the premises and its metamorphosis
Located in the Forn del Vidre building, at the crossroads with Carrer Arquitecte Gaudí, the Mercadona supermarket stopped operating in December 2019. Its relocation to the Sagrada Família neighborhood left the space empty and unused , with the blinds down and a large poster announcing the rental of the building of more than 3,000 square meters.
Design and functionality of the new car park
According to sources close to the initiative, the new car park will be divided into two areas, with exclusive access via Carrer Gaudí. The first floor will house the car park that was already accessible to supermarket customers, while the second underground floor will be for the building’s neighbors. In addition, a new entrance is planned to facilitate access from the Vic road.
Works necessary for the adaptation
To make this conversion possible, several adaptation works will be necessary, including the remodeling of the ventilation system and the installation of access control barriers. The developers have confirmed that these improvements will be complete within a period of two to three months.
Details on the parking offer
The new public car park will not only offer spaces for vehicles, but will also have spaces reserved for 24-hour rental. Prices for cars will be 120 euros per month, while motorbikes will cost 60 euros. In addition, special emphasis will be placed on the night care service, with rates ranging from 60 to 85 euros, depending on the days.
A legacy that endures
The conversion of the old Mercadona has also brought back memories of its closure. It was a quick process, with the supermarket operating until the last minute before moving to its new premises. Its new location in the Sagrada Família neighborhood has involved a significant investment and the creation of a new road that connects to other parts of the city.
A promising future
With the arrival of Parking Gaudí, Manresa not only recovers a space that had been forgotten, but also responds to the growing demand for parking in the city. This initiative is an example of how abandoned spaces can be transformed to better serve the community.
