The memory of a silenced figure

Tortosa City Council is preparing a tribute in memory of Sebastià Campos Terré, coinciding with the 85th anniversary of his execution by Franco. Campos Terré, who served as director of the republican newspaper El Pueblo, was assassinated in Camp de la Bota in Barcelona on July 5, 1939 after a very summary War Council.

Claiming ‘Tortoise Memories’

This event will mark the beginning of the ‘Tortosine Memories’ cycle, an initiative that seeks to claim relevant personalities during the Civil War and the Franco regime. The councilor of the Democratic Memory of the City Council, Mar Lleixà, announced this cycle in an event focused on Franco’s repression in the Terres de l’Ebre.

Recognizing the victims

In the words of Lleixà, ‘This year it will be 85 years since the shooting of Sebastià Campos, a figure who for too many years has been silenced, we must remember the damage suffered by the victims of the Franco regime and also that of their families’. In addition, the importance of remembering and honoring those people who fought for democracy during this period is highlighted.

Exhibiting research

Recently, the journalist Gustau Moreno has published a series of reports on the last steps of Campos Terré in Barcelona, through exhaustive research. This has highlighted the need to preserve historical memory and pay tribute to those who fought against fascism.

Commitment to memory

The act of commemoration of drunkards shot and killed in Franco’s prisons, which took place in the Teaching Room of the Tortosa Museum, was the occasion to announce the ‘Tortosian Memories’ initiative. This day, organized by the territorial services of Justice, Rights and Memory in the Terres de l’Ebre and the general management of Democratic Memory with the support of the City Council, paid tribute to nearly 350 victims of the Ebre who were shot and died in prisons Francoists between 1938 and 1948, including 43 tortoises.

Accompaniment and recognition

The event was attended by the relatives of the victims, as well as a conference by the historian Francesc Tolosana, who contributed to strengthening the commitment to the preservation of historical memory and the vindication of the ‘Tortovian Memories’ ‘.
