The Ukrainian invasion: a new dynamic in the conflict

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has recently commented that Ukraine’s military operations inside Russian borders present a ‘significant challenge’ to Vladimir Putin. In his statements, Biden highlighted his constant communication with the Ukrainian authorities, stressing that the conflict is entering a decisive stage.

The repercussions of the Ukrainian incursions

With the recent military activity, Ukraine has entered a new phase of the war, with troops entering several regions of Russia, including Kursk and Belgorod, which have been declared in a state of emergency. The Ukrainian government has insisted that its aim is not to occupy Russian territory, but to establish a ‘swap fund’ for future peace negotiations.

Zelensky and the new strategic approach

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has stated that he remains in contact with the military leaders, acknowledging that the ‘battles are complex and intensely contested’. It has claimed that Ukrainian forces are advancing in the Kursk region, increasing their control over a territory spanning some 1,000 square kilometers.

International support for Ukraine

Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, has reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to Ukraine, stressing that Putin has not been able to dismantle the Ukrainian resistance to his invasion. ‘He is being forced to retreat’, said Borrell, highlighting Ukraine’s determination in this fight.

Financial aid to sustain Ukraine

The European Commission recently transferred 4.2 billion euros to Kyiv as part of a total fund of 50 billion euros intended to keep the Ukrainian state operational during the conflict. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported that the EU has provided a total of almost €114 billion in support to Ukraine since the start of the war.

Looking to the future

With the conflict evolving, Ukraine’s strategies and international support will continue to be crucial in determining the course of the war. Ukraine’s actions could redefine the geopolitical landscape in the region and influence future peace negotiations.
