Improvement of the urban environment

In various peripheral neighborhoods of Barcelona, the overwhelming presence of wiring hanging from electrical poles has generated an urban environment that makes the accessibility and aesthetics of the streets difficult. Barcelona City Council has announced an investment of 10.5 million euros to bury power lines and remove support poles, with the aim of improving the quality of public space and eliminating obstacles for pedestrians.

Comprehensive maintenance plan

This project is part of the Comprehensive Improvement Plan for Public Space, which seeks to renew urban elements to maintain the excellence of the environment. In addition to the elimination of overhead wiring, the plan considers new urban realities, such as the creation of more green spaces, water scarcity and the effects of climate change.

Impact on accessibility

The removal of sidewalk posts will have a significant impact on accessibility, especially for people with reduced mobility. With more than 34% of trips in the city made on foot, keeping sidewalks free of obstacles is crucial to guarantee pedestrian circulation.

Key initiatives

The project will begin on Doctor Bové Street, in the Carmel neighborhood, with the elimination of poles and the burying of electrical and telecommunications lines. This initiative will serve as a model for other similar actions in different districts of the city.

Areas of action

The plan includes 56 areas of action distributed throughout the city, from Ciutat Vella to Sant Martí. Each specific area will receive attention for the removal of poles and the burying of cables, with the aim of improving accessibility and urban aesthetics.

Coordination and execution

The first deputy mayor, Laia Bonet, has highlighted the importance of this plan to accelerate the removal of overhead cables. Coordination with electricity and telecommunications companies will be essential for the success of the actions, which will be carried out in a coordinated and rapid manner over a period of three years.
