A Celebration of 325 Years of Tradition
2025 will mark a significant moment for Vilafranca del Penedès, as it will commemorate the 325th anniversary of the arrival of the remains of Saint Felix, a central figure in local history and culture. This anniversary not only represents a religious event, but also becomes an opportunity to explore the town’s historical heritage.
A Path Full of Meaning
The history of the relics of Saint Felix begins on September 11, 1700, when his remains were received in Vilafranca after a long process. The key events that preceded this arrival include the granting of the relics on October 26, 1699 and the formalization of the donation on March 15, 1700, moments that have left a profound mark on the identity of the community.
A Common Heritage in Catalonia
Catalonia has witnessed numerous celebrations related to the reception of relics, such as the commemoration of the 700th anniversary of Saint Thecla in Tarragona or the 250th anniversary of the relic of Saint Candia in Falset. However, the arrival of the remains of Saint Felix in Vilafranca is an exceptional case, as it is an almost complete body, a fact that stands out in the historical context of the time.
A Committee for the Celebration
Throughout 2024, a diverse group of local community members, journalists, historians and parish representatives have worked together to design a programme of activities to honour the figure of Saint Felix. This programme seeks not only to celebrate the legacy of the co-patron saint, but also to establish connections with contemporary Vilafranca.
A Year of Celebrations and Learning
With a set of activities that cover cultural, historical, religious and popular aspects, the celebration aims to be inclusive and educational, leaving a lasting mark on the collective memory of Vilafranca. The organizers hope that this anniversary will be remembered not only as a festive event, but as an opportunity to learn about the past to better understand the present.
