Vox presents a proposal to repeal the Balearic Islands Record and Recognition Act

The Vox political party has presented today to the Balearic Parliament a Bill with the aim of revoking the Balearic Islands Record and Recognition Law, popularly known as the Democratic Record Law, which was approved in 2018 during the first mandate of the socialist Francina Armengol. This action is aligned with the legislative agreement reached between the PP and Vox, in which the members of Santiago Abascal undertook to abstain from the investiture of the popular Marga Prohens as President of the Government.

Criticism of the legislation and the intention to replace it

Vox’s intention to revoke the existing legislation is linked to replacing it with laws when named ‘concord’. From the ministerial level, the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, led by Ángel Víctor Torres, has already announced that it will fight this Vox initiative before the Constitutional Court.

Disagreement with the Law and questioning fundamental rights

Vox argues that the Law is an attempt against the equality of all Spaniards and violates Article 14 of the Constitution, which they consider key to fundamental rights. According to the party, this legislation discriminates and excludes a part of the Spanish people based on their opinions, personal, social or historical circumstances, such as which side they fought on. They argue that this promotes rancor and prevents the recognition of all those who fought for Spain, regardless of which side they participated in.

Questioning the right to ideological freedom and thought

Vox considers that the Law is a clear violation of the right to ideological freedom and thought, recognized in article 16 of the Constitution. They claim that this regulation limits freedom of expression and thought, imposing a single official narrative and suppressing the right to disagree.

Criticism of the interference of the state and the limitation of the work of historians

The far-right formation also criticizes the alleged meddling of the state in the sphere of consciousness of Spaniards, the manipulation of individual memory, the limitation of freedom of opinion and the penalization of the work of historians if they are not ‘fits the partisan interpretation of historical facts.

Interpretation of historical facts and analysis of the Civil War

In the document presented, Vox states that the Law does not pursue the values of freedom, respect and tolerance, attributing to it an intention to shape the individual memory of Spaniards, imposing an official narrative and curtailing freedom of opinion. In addition, the far-right formation places the historical context of the Spanish Civil War within a generalized upheaval at European level, characterized by ideological passions, extreme politicization and dehumanization of the other.
