Withdrawal of the Land Law in the Spanish Congress

The Spanish government has requested that the land law be removed from the agenda of the plenary session of Congress due to the lack of sufficient support for its approval. Faced with the possibility of facing another defeat in Congress, the socialists chose to withdraw the law minutes before their debate began, scheduled for 9 in the morning. The PSOE did not have the support of any of the investiture partners, since Sumar announced his support for the amendments to the entire rule proposed by ERC, Juntos and Podemos. This left the PSOE at the mercy of the PP for the law to prosper, which was perceived as a probable defeat on the part of the executive.

Arguments and Strategic Withdrawal

Moncloa has justified this withdrawal in order to guarantee that the rule is not affected by the electoral situation in the middle of the European election campaign on June 9. Furthermore, they have accused the Popular Party of lacking a sense of State and prioritizing their electoral interests over the demand of city councils and autonomous communities to favor the development of public housing.

Reactions and Lamentations

The ERC spokesperson in Congress, Gabriel Rufián, regretted the inability of the PSOE to negotiate laws, highlighting the lack of dialogue and interlocution. For her part, the general secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, celebrated the withdrawal of the land law, describing it as a reform that seeks to legalize and protect illegal developments.

Housing Ministry Perspective

According to the Ministry of Housing, the bill sought to guarantee the legal security of urban developments and offer guarantees of environmental protection. They regret that the law is being held back by the socialists’ need to avoid a new setback in Congress.

Forward-Looking Statements

The Minister of Housing, Isabel Rodríguez, is expected to make statements about this law in Congress.
