The reality of people in poverty

Worry and uncertainty are feelings that surround the daily lives of many people around us who are in a situation of poverty. This reality particularly affects women with dependent children, migrants in an irregular situation, the long-term unemployed, young people living in precariousness, children who do not receive enough attention, homeless people and elderly people living alone. Unfortunately, these people are excluded from our society and do not have access to the social rights that belong to them, such as employment, housing, regularization, voting and participation. These people often go unnoticed and we don’t see them, but they are here. **(1)**

Difficulties in social management

Dysfunctions in social management have a significant impact on the most vulnerable population. An example of this is the change in the food distribution model of the European Economic Community, which has generated confusion both among public administrations and among social entities. This situation makes it even more difficult for vulnerable people to get out of social exclusion, since they cannot access the aid to which they are entitled and which are vital for their survival. This causes a feeling of helplessness and despair in families, and contributes to increased social exclusion and inequality. **(2)**

The action of Caritas

Cáritas diocesana de Tarragona is an organization that works to reverse the growing trend of social exclusion and inequality. Its director, Salvador Grané, states that it is essential to accompany the most vulnerable people in their rights and at the same time denounce the social and economic system that marginalizes a part of the population. During 2023, Cáritas has carried out several actions to help people in poverty, such as 35 social projects that have benefited more than 20,000 people and more than 9,000 families. **(3)**

Profile of the people served

Poverty continues to have a female dimension, as 70% of people who seek help from Caritas are women. More than half of the households served have dependent children. An increase in loneliness has also been observed, with one in four people treated living alone. The number of children and young people benefiting has increased to 46%, indicating that poverty is increasingly affecting young people. In addition, 32% of the people served have not yet been able to regularize their legal situation. **(4)**

Challenges in the workplace and housing

Access to employment is one of the main challenges for people living in poverty. 40% of people of working age do not have primary education, 61% are unemployed and 15% of people who work live in poverty despite having a job. In addition, 95% of these people do not receive any minimum income assistance. In terms of housing, one out of every 4 people treated has housing instability, either because of living in precarious, occupied or leased housing. **(5)**

Caritas actions for job placement and access to housing

Cáritas works to improve the lives of people in poverty through job placement. During 2023, they have increased the training offer in occupational courses by 40% and have achieved that 18% of the people who have participated in these courses have found work. In addition, Cáritas has hired 35 people in collaboration with other entities and social services. In terms of housing, actions have been taken to alleviate rental problems, such as a financial assistance plan in collaboration with other organizations. **(6)**

Thanks to the collaboration of different entities

Cáritas Diocesana de Tarragona thanks the collaboration and financial participation of many people, companies and public administrations that make its work possible. Without this support, it would not be possible to help the most vulnerable people and improve their living conditions. **(7)**

conclusion

Caritas will continue to work alongside the most vulnerable people, without distinction, and collaborate with other entities and social services to improve care for people in situations of poverty. The goal is to provide faster, more effective and humane care for those people who need it most. **(8)**
