The city of Barcelona has recognized the career and talent of various creators and professionals in different fields of culture, education and society. The 2023 City of Barcelona Awards have been awarded to 12 categories and have an endowment of 9,500 euros each.
Music, performing arts and visual arts
In the field of music, the award went to the organist Montserrat Torrent, 97 years old, for her artistic activity during the past year, which included a concert tour in Barcelona, as well as the publication of a new album The jury highlighted her “musical and human quality, which make her a benchmark in Catalan music”.
The actor Joan Carreras has received the performing arts award for his performance in Gabriel Calderón’s play History of a Boar (or Ricard’s Something), where he demonstrated “interpretive excellence and an ability of transformation and communication with the public”.
The visual arts award went to the sculptor David Bestué, for the exhibition Ciutat de sorra, which could be seen at Fabra i Coats: Contemporary Art Centre. The jury has valued its “discursive and formal forcefulness based on the sculptural work through a critical and exhaustive investigation of the recent history of Barcelona”.
Other categories
In the field of popular and community cultures, the prize went to the Raval’s Festival, from the Tot Raval Foundation, for its “reinterpretation of the civic-festive occupation of public space, claiming it, at the same time, as to the heritage of the citizenry, with an intercultural perspective”.
The education award has recognized the work of the Miquel Tarradell Institute, for its “consolidation of an educational project that combines the valuing of all the languages of the community with the learning and use of Catalan” .
The award for architecture, urbanism and design went to the exhibition Els nous realistes. Catalan and Balearic architecture since the 2008 crisis, curated by Carme Ribas and Joan Roig, and designed by Victòria Garriga, for its “critical and reflective look at the architectural production of recent years”.
Finally, the award for digital and audiovisual culture has gone to the audiovisual Alteritats, by Alba Cros Pellisé and Nora Haddad Casadevall, for its “approach to sexual and identity dissidences from an intimate and natural witness”.
The awards will be presented on February 13 in a ceremony at Saló de Cent.
