A new vision of romantic love
Valentine’s Day, known as the day of lovers, is a traditional celebration that has spread to other cultures through literature and film. This festivity promotes a model of sex-affective relationship based on emotional bonds beyond sexual desire. However, experts point out that Catalan society in the 21st century has experienced a change in the conception of love and relationships.
A more responsible and less idealized vision
According to Bruna Alvarez, professor and researcher of the AFIN group of the Department of Anthropology of the UAB, the Catalan population now expects love to be a greater emotional responsibility as opposed to the sacrifices of romantic love. This new vision of love relationships emphasizes the importance of communication, trust and mutual respect. In addition, clinical psychologist and sexologist Emma Ribas claims that a shift towards conscious love and self-knowledge is taking place, thanks to emotional and sexual education.
The challenges of today’s society
The experts also point out some challenges that Catalan society in the 21st century must face in relation to love and relationships. Elena Crespi, sexological psychologist, highlights the lack of education in terms of gender relations and feminism, especially among cis-hetero boys. In addition, Enric Soler, relational psychologist and professor at the UOC, points out that there is a trend towards more flexible but also more ephemeral relationship models, characterized by the fear of commitment and the weakening of ties.
Family and birth
The institution of the family has also experienced changes in Catalan society. Bruna Alvarez emphasizes that the massive entry of women into the labor market and the impoverishment of young generations have affected the birth rate and the nuclear family. In addition, Julieta Piastro, professor of Contemporary Thought, points out that capitalism has created family models that adapt to productive needs, but that do not always promote people’s well-being.
Sexuality and diversity
In relation to sexuality, experts agree that there is still a cis-heteronormative and sexist tendency. However, they celebrate the increase in diversity in terms of orientations and identities. Monogamy is also being questioned, although no assessment is made on its suitability. In addition, a change has been observed in the profile of people seeking help in matters of sexuality, with a greater diversity of inquiries.
The road to a new conception of love
Despite the changes that have taken place in Catalan society in the 21st century in relation to love and relationships, experts point out that there are still challenges to overcome and a path to travel. It is necessary to work on emotional and sexual education, as well as on gender equality and mutual respect. In addition, a vision of love based on emotional responsibility and open and sincere communication must be fostered.
