by PREMIUM.CAT

A historic agreement

The Minister of the Interior, Institutional Relations and Participation, Joan Saura, signed today a collaboration agreement with the mayors of Gavà, Joaquim Balsera, the mayor of Gurb, Joan Roca, and the president of the Association for Recovery of the Historical Memory of Catalonia, Manel Perona. This historic agreement will allow the exhumation of the Gurb mass grave, located between the Can Cadet and La Rovira farmhouses, next June.

Recognition and dignity

The historiographic data on the grave ensure that there would be between 20 and 25 republican soldiers buried. This exhumation represents an act of recognition and dignity towards those who fought for their convictions. After the exhumation, the identification work will be carried out and the families will have the opportunity to bury the bodies with their relatives in the cemeteries of Gavà and Gurb.

Commitment to historical memory

This agreement also establishes a protocol that will guide future actions in this area once the Pits Law is approved, now in the parliamentary process. The protocol will detail the interdisciplinary methodology that will need to be followed when an exhumation is approved in application of the future Graves Law, thus reaffirming the commitment to historical memory and the preservation of historical truth.
