Widespread and heavy rainfall in the northeast
The beginning of the week is marked by atmospheric instability throughout the Catalan territory. Weak and scattered rains have been recorded since early in the morning, but they are expected to intensify from midday, especially in the northeastern sector and occasionally in the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees. According to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, rainfall will extend in the afternoon to most of the eastern half, although it is not ruled out in other areas on a more isolated and occasional basis.
In the late afternoon, rain will also reach the northern side of the Pyrenees and the Port massif. Heavy rains are expected in the Maresme, the Vallès Oriental, the Selva, the Gironès, the Garrotxa, the Baix Empordà and the Alt Empordà. These regions are under a moderate risk warning, as up to 20 liters per square meter could accumulate in just half an hour during the afternoon. In addition, the wind will blow with the force of the mistral and tramontana, and will continue until Tuesday or Wednesday. In the following days, the rain will subside and will concentrate in the Pyrenees and Alt Empordà, and from Thursday the skies will clear. At the end of the week, there could be another sporadic shower.
Snowfall in the Pyrenees and activation of the Neucat pre-alert
The snow level will drop from 1,600 meters to between 1,200 and 1,300 meters, although in times of rain it could drop even lower. On the northern side of the Pyrenees and in the Port massif, the snow level will drop to 1,100-1,000 meters after nightfall. Civil Protection has activated the pre-alert phase of the Special Emergency Plan for Snowfall in Catalonia (Neucat), since snowfalls of more than 20 centimeters thick are expected in the Aran Valley, Alta Ribagorça and Pallars Sobirà. However, the Meteorological Service of Catalonia predicts that the most significant snowfall will occur on Tuesday.
