The General Directorate of Emergencies lifts the wind alert on the island of El Hierro

The island of El Hierro is no longer in a wind alert situation as of this Thursday, January 25, as reported by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands. The rest of the Archipelago continues to be on pre-alert status due to adverse meteorological phenomena.

This measure is adopted taking into account the information provided by the State Meteorological Agency and other available sources, and in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

The southeast wind has exceeded 100 kilometers per hour in the extreme northeast of El Hierro

Last Monday, the General Directorate of Emergencies declared a wind alert situation, with winds from the southeast, which mainly affected the extreme northeast, the El Golfo Valley and the high areas and peaks of the island, with maximum gusts that could reach and exceed 60 to 90 kilometers per hour.

This Wednesday, the wind gusts that hit the northeastern end of El Hierro reached over 100 kilometers per hour, which motivated the city council to suspend classes, extracurricular activities and those carried out in outdoor municipal facilities.

The authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary trips to prevent risks

Given this situation, the authorities advised the population to avoid unnecessary travel in order to prevent risks. Likewise, citizens were asked to follow civil protection recommendations and to be attentive to official information.
