An unprecedented award in the State for its carbon footprint
Tourism in Catalonia has received new recognition for its commitment to sustainability. The municipality of Santa Susanna, in the Maresme, has managed to become the first sun and beach destination in Spain to have a carbon footprint certificate, an indicator that measures the emissions of greenhouse gases generated by tourist activity. The City Council of Santa Susanna announced this in a press release, where it also explained that it is the second tourist destination in the entire State to have this certification, surpassed only by the city of Valencia.
The certificate has been awarded by the Spanish Association of Standardization and Certification (Aenor), according to the criteria of the international standard ISO 14064, and covers the entire life cycle of the tourist activity. This distinction represents a “qualitative leap” in Santa Susanna’s commitment to “sustainable and innovative” tourism, which is “respectful of the environment and the future of the planet”, as the council has highlighted.
A symbolic delivery to Fitur
The carbon footprint certificate has been given to the mayor of Santa Susanna, Joan Campolier, as part of the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) which is being held these days in Madrid. Campolier has expressed his “pride” for this recognition and has reaffirmed the “commitment” of his municipality to “maintain its leadership and reference in the sector in accordance with the highest quality standards that incorporate sustainability as a sign of identity”.
The carbon footprint is an indicator that quantifies the CO₂ emissions that are released into the atmosphere as a result of the life cycle of a product, service or organization. Certification implies the starting point for designing a strategy to reduce or offset emissions. The Santa Susanna City Council has indicated that it has been working in this direction for years, with measures such as the installation of solar panels, the improvement of energy efficiency or waste management.
