Connect towns
The Consell Comarcal de la Garrotxa aims to implement measures to deal with the drought affecting the region. In a recent meeting with mayors and territorial representatives, the importance of connecting towns through municipal water networks was highlighted. This connection will allow water to be transferred from one village to another in case of need, thus guaranteeing the supply of water to all the towns in the region. According to the president of the Garrotxa County Council, Santi Reixach, this project does not require a large investment and can help alleviate complicated situations in times of drought.
A water community
Another measure being promoted is the creation of a water community. This community will bring together different agents to make decisions in times of extreme drought. It will be similar to the irrigation communities that already exist in other territories of Catalonia. The goal is to determine what actions to take and how to reward users who have to turn off the faucet. This project is already underway and meetings are being held with representatives of the Generalitat and other organizations to establish the foundations of this community. According to Reixach, it is important to involve the business sector, agriculture and other actors affected by this problem.
Currently, La Garrotxa is in an exceptional phase due to the drought and it is predicted that, if there is no rain, it could enter an emergency phase in the coming months. However, water is still available for now, although the aquifers have dropped considerably. The town most affected by the drought is Mieres, which for months has had to resort to tankers to supply water to the population. This situation has already been experienced in other municipalities in the region, such as Tortellà or Argelaguer, during 2022.
