Pedro Sánchez’s democratic regeneration plan
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, presents his plan for democratic regeneration to the Plenum of the Congress of Deputies. The aim of this plan, according to his words, is to end the impunity of some media that spread unverified information and rumours.
Proposed reforms
Sánchez proposes to modify the institutional advertising law to incorporate transparency in the financing of digital media with public resources. In addition, it seeks to modify the organic law on the right to honor and rectification.
Reactions of the opposition
The opposition considers that this plan seeks to silence and shut up the media inconvenient for the Government, especially in relation to cases of alleged corruption affecting the president. The head of the opposition, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, will focus on these matters in his speech to Congress.
Government justification
The Government justifies the president’s meetings with entrepreneurs, pointing out that these are common and that the entrepreneur in question is relevant in his field, e-commerce.
Measures pending to be detailed
Details on how some of the proposed measures are intended to be implemented are still lacking. Sánchez also wants to incorporate the contributions of the parliamentary groups in this regeneration plan.
Reactions of the opposition to the proposals
The opposition considers that this democratic regeneration plan seeks to silence the independent press and restrict informational freedom. The intention to denounce these possible restrictions to the European Union has been announced.
Other proposed reforms
In addition to the reforms already mentioned, an agreement has been reached to revise the Penal Code in relation to the crimes of insults to the Crown and other institutions of the State, as well as offenses against religious sentiments.
