An annual meeting for peace

Faithful to its tradition, every year the students of the rural schools of La Palma come together once again to celebrate the School Day of Non-Violence and Peace. With the motto ‘Promoting peace, valuing our differences’, around half a thousand boys and girls from 11 municipalities of La Palma will meet in the island capital to participate in a day full of symbolism.

A demonstration that inspires

The meeting point will be the Plaza de San Fernando at 09:45 am, where the flag raising will take place and the mayor of the host municipality, Asier Antona Gómez, will give a welcome speech. From there, the ‘walk for peace’ will depart, a march on foot that will travel down Anselmo Pérez de Brito Street until reaching the Plaza de España. During the tour, you can enjoy performances by the talented timplist Germán López along with guitarist Carlos Martín, as well as the fascinating stories told by storyteller Laura Escuela.

Later, at 1:00 p.m., the closing ceremony will take place, where the president of the Cabildo of La Palma, Sergio Rodríguez Fernández, will receive the torch that symbolizes the demonstration and will address a few words to the audience. The finishing touch will be the reading of a manifesto by the students, followed by the emotional singing of the Peace Hymn of the Unitarian Schools of La Palma. Without a doubt, a melody that represents the spirit of this endearing celebration.

An exhibition and a solidarity market

Throughout the day, artistic structures created by boys and girls from all schools will be exhibited on O’daly Street, related to the theme chosen for this year. In addition, on the street there will be a solidarity market organized by the five rural school groups of La Palma, where the educational community will get involved to raise funds for the Red Cross. An opportunity to contribute and be part of this admirable initiative.

The annual meeting of the Unitarians of La Palma for peace is an event that not only seeks to promote harmony and understanding among the little ones, but also inspires all those who participate in it. A day dedicated to valuing our differences and working together for a better world, where peace and coexistence are the fundamental pillars of our society.
