Unlocking the General Council of the Judiciary

After more than 2,000 days, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) and the Popular Party (PP) have reached an agreement for the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). This agreement puts an end to the deadlock that had occurred in this judicial body.

Composition of the new CGPJ

According to the agreement, of the twenty members who will be part of the CGPJ, ten will be people with affiliation to the PSOE and another ten will be people with affiliation to the PP. This distribution seeks to guarantee a balanced representation between the two parties.

Renovation needed

The mandate of the current members of the CGPJ had expired five and a half years ago, so it was urgent to proceed with its renewal. This agreement will allow the situation to be unblocked and ensure the proper functioning of the Judiciary.

Agreement signed in Brussels

The agreement for the renewal of the CGPJ was signed in Brussels between representatives of the PSOE and the PP. This international mediation was key to reaching a satisfactory agreement for both parties.

Importance of the agreement

This agreement is essential for the renewal of the Judiciary and for guaranteeing the independence and proper functioning of justice. With this renewal, we seek to recover the prestige of the CGPJ and work with full legitimacy.
