A New Look at Holiness
I was deeply affected when Pope Francis baptized with this title some individuals that we find in various areas of our daily lives. These individuals, called ‘saints’ anonymously, can be found on the streets, in shops, at the gates of our homes, at work or volunteering. They are people who will never be recognized or beatified by the Church, since their sanctity remains completely unnoticed by themselves and by society in general.
A Title That Goes Beyond the Catholic Scope
This title granted by the Pope is not limited exclusively to Catholics, but extends to anyone who embodies the characteristics of ‘holiness’. This distinction does not refer only to members of the Catholic community, but to any man or woman who embodies this virtue.
A Living Example of Anonymous Holiness
I had the opportunity to closely observe a man who embodies this ‘anonymous holiness’. This man, who is a regular at a parish with which I had ties in the past, caught my attention. His appearance did not stand out at all: neither tall, nor short, neither attractive, nor unpleasant. At first glance, he looked like a common and ordinary individual. However, as I observed him, I recognized in him a beatific attitude.
A Selfless Service
During a meeting at the table, I witnessed his dedication to a woman suffering from Alzheimer’s. Not only was he attentive to her, but he was also proactive in helping in any situation that required it. His attitude of service was so intrinsic to him that his absence became more evident than his presence.
The Importance of Love and Service
These ‘next door saints’ are essential individuals, although they often go unnoticed. Its essence lies in the love that radiates in its actions. This love is inherent in them and manifests itself through selfless service, making them essential but often overlooked figures in our society.
