Putin rules out attacking Poland or Latvia
Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated in an interview broadcast on Thursday that Russia will fight for its interests, but that it has no interest in extending its war in Ukraine to other countries such as Poland or Latvia. Putin made this comment in an interview with the controversial American journalist Tucker Carlson, the first he has granted to a Westerner since he launched the Russian invasion of Ukraine two years ago this February 24.
Interview with Tucker Carlson
Carlson had the most-watched program on Fox News until last April, when the American network fired him. Currently, he has his own medium, the Tucker Carlson Network, and also broadcasts live on the X network, where he mainly broadcasts interviews with extreme politicians, including former president Donald Trump, of whom he declares himself an admirer.
Putin’s positioning
Putin has stated that Russia will fight for its interests, but has no intention of attacking Poland or Latvia. In addition, he emphasized that his war is limited to Ukraine and will not spread to other European countries.
I refuse to value American politics
During the interview, the Russian president did not want to assess American policy, nor did he want to make concrete proposals to end the war in Ukraine, beyond showing a general willingness to negotiate.
Statements on possible scenarios
When asked if he could imagine a scenario in which he would send Russian troops to Poland, a member of the EU and NATO, Putin replied: “Only in one case, if Poland attacks Russia. Because? Because we have no interest in Poland, Latvia or anywhere else”.
Relations with other presidents
Putin has admitted that throughout his political career he has had a good relationship with some presidents such as George W. Bush (2001-2009) or Donald Trump (2017-2021).
