A historic strike against cuts
Javier Milei has been in office for just over a month and has already announced a package of cuts that affect the working class and popular sectors of Argentina. In response to these measures, the working class and popular sectors have called a National Strike for January 24.
The cut plan and its consequences
The new government, made up of traditional right-wing figures from former president Macri’s circle, has announced a Decree of Necessity and Urgency that modifies hundreds of laws and an Omnibus Law. These measures are in addition to brutal devaluation and price liberalization, which have led to monthly inflation of 30%, mass layoffs in the private sector, suspensions of public worker contracts and increases in utility, transport and electricity tariffs .
These policies benefit US and European multinationals and the IMF, but harm the working class and popular sectors. Among the most controversial measures are the easing of external borrowing, the privatization of 41 public companies and a labor reform that limits the right to strike, allows free and cheap dismissals, promotes outsourcing and encourages unregistered hiring.
Society’s response
Faced with these measures, Argentine society has organized itself to protest and defend its rights. Demonstrations, riots and other forms of protest have been held throughout the country. The union central CGT has called a 24-hour strike day for January 24, with the aim of fighting the cuts and demanding a national struggle plan.
Internationalist solidarity
From Lluita Internationalista, the Revolutionary Current of Workers and Workers, and Socialism and Freedom, we propose to the organizations of combative trade unionism, social movements and the Catalan anti-capitalist left, together with the organizations of the Argentine community in Catalonia, to organize an action in support of the National Strike of January 24. We call a rally in front of the Consulate of Argentina in Barcelona at 1:00 p.m. that same day and the delivery to the register of communiques rejecting the measures of the Milei government and in support of the struggling sectors.
