The Risk of Global Warming and the Consequences on People

In recent times, we have seen a worrying increase in the average temperature on a global scale, putting both our lives and ecosystems at risk. Although some areas of Catalonia have experienced a relatively cool June, globally the temperature has broken a new record with an increase of 1.5 ºC compared to the historical average. This increase has had a dramatic impact on the number of heat-related deaths, especially among the elderly and those who do not have the resources to cope with this situation.

The Urgency of Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are the main cause of global warming and the climate crisis, so it is crucial to push for measures to drastically reduce emissions. In Catalonia, despite a slight decrease of 5.5% in emissions in 2023 compared to the previous year, we are still far from the necessary reductions according to the IPCC. Efforts must be redoubled to keep emissions within planetary limits and make rapid progress in decarbonisation.

The Challenge of Decarbonisation and the Transition to Renewable Energies

Decarbonisation poses the challenge of electrifying our lives and our productive processes through the massive use of renewable energies and the replacement of polluting technologies with sustainable alternatives. Renewable energies offer additional benefits such as the decentralization of energy generation, greater autonomy with respect to fossil energy sources and the regeneration of ecosystems. Despite concerns about the use of land and materials, the comparative impact of renewable energies is significantly lower compared to current fossil technologies.

Financing as a Barrier to the Advancement of Renewable Energies

A key obstacle to the advancement of renewable energy is the question of financing. Although public support is essential, it is equally important to stimulate the participation of private financing, as renewable energy offers a stable but low return. An environment of low interest rates is necessary to guarantee the economic viability of these projects. In addition, it is vital to increase public participation in the privatized energy system and establish clear lines regarding investment in green energies.

The Benefits of the Energy Transition and Public Participation

Despite the economic and social challenges posed by the energy transition, the benefits are significant. It is necessary to promote public policies that facilitate financing and community participation to guarantee their effective and lasting implementation.
