A Different Opinion
With some regularity I take part in the ‘Taula d’análisis’ talk show, on Tuesdays at Ona Mediterrània. In one of these radio dialogues, I expressed the importance of highlighting the good news amidst the bad, especially research results and their transfer to society.
However, in relation to the rector’s team headed by Dr. Jaume Carot, the situation is different. The eviction of members of the Camp for Palestine and other issues have generated disagreements.
The Decision of the UIB
The UIB Board of Directors published regulations that restrict the access of animals to university buildings. At first glance, this decision may seem trivial, but it has important implications.
Instead of adapting to animalistic trends and ‘pet friendly’ spaces, the UIB has chosen to prohibit the entry of pets. This raises questions about modernity and empathy with pets.
Justifications and Criticisms
The regulations are based on hygienic, sanitary and safety reasons. However, these justifications have generated controversy. It has been questioned whether the scientific evidence supports these restrictions and whether corporate rights are being prioritized over other considerations.
This decision has been interpreted as an act of cynophobia and as a message that reinforces immobilist tendencies. This has generated calls to revoke the regulations and to consider more innovative alternatives.
