A Call for Citizen Responsibility

I wanted to address lighter topics, such as cooking recipes or everyday tips, but current events force me to remember the importance of the European elections and the impact of consumption on the environment.

It is crucial to remind those who chose to lounge on the beach rather than exercise their right to vote that political decisions have a direct impact on our lives. In these elections we have a lot at stake, and the threat of the victory of the extreme right is real.

The Challenge of Climate Change

The proposals of some political parties to reverse part of the Sustainable Development Goals agreed in Paris represent a threat to the environment. The climate emergency is denied by these parties, which puts the sustainability of the planet at risk.

It is essential to understand that the food system is both one of the main causes of climate change and the main solution. Legislation in the European Parliament, such as the Common Agricultural Policy, plays a crucial role in this regard.

The Impact of Consumption on the Environment and the Economy

The impact of consumption on the environment is evident in the production and transportation of food. The purchase of products grown far from our environment contributes to the emission of CO₂ and has a negative economic and social impact in rural areas.

By not supporting local products, the primary sector is impoverished and the depopulation of rural areas is encouraged, generating social and economic imbalances. The establishment of population in these areas is essential for the custody of nature and social and economic balance.

The Importance of the Primary Sector

The primary sector not only provides food, but also provides ecosystem services. The cultivation of land regenerates soil carbon sinks, helping to sustain the level of energy consumption in society.

The activity of the primary sector not only establishes population in the territory, but also contributes to maintaining its health. It is crucial to understand that our consumer decisions have a direct impact on the environment and society as a whole.
