Unprecedented rainfall in Catalonia

The rains this Monday in the regions of Girona have left accumulated precipitation that had not been seen for weeks in Catalonia, which is experiencing the worst drought of the last century, according to data from the Generalitat. The episode of precipitation, which in principle it seems that it will not have continuity in the next few days, it has left up to 70 liters per square meter in Calonge (Baix Empordà) or 60 liters per square meter in Palamós (Baix Empordà), according to the data published by the Quatre Estacions Project. Regarding the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat), the heaviest precipitation has been recorded at the stations of Castell d’Aro (Baix Empordà), with 43.6 liters per square meter, and Cassà de la Selva (Gironès) , with 34.8 liters per square meter.

The drought in Catalonia

This year’s rainfall data is very worrying. Much of Catalonia is in an emergency phase and no episodes of continuous rain are expected in the coming weeks. As every year, the great hope is that the spring rains will allow the reservoirs to be refilled, even if only partially, and slow down the decline in water reserves. Since the beginning of the year, the weather stations that have recorded the most precipitation are those in the Pyrenees, specifically those located at more than 2,000 meters in height.

Seasons with more precipitation in the Pyrenees

According to the data, the seasons with the most precipitation in the Pyrenees have been:
