The PSOE informs the European Commission about Feijóo’s change of position in relation to Catalonia
In response to warnings and complaints from the Spanish right about the amnesty law, the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) has sent a letter to the European Commission to inform them about the change of position of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the Popular Party ( PP), in relation to Catalonia. In the letter, the PSOE highlights that Feijóo has shown a more open attitude towards reconciliation in Catalonia and has considered the possibility of a conditional pardon for Carles Puigdemont, despite having previously criticized the pardons granted by the Spanish Government. This change in position is similar to Pedro Sánchez’s speech when he granted government pardons to the leaders of the process and when he began the processing of the amnesty.
The PSOE summarizes the position of the PP and the news that contradicts its arguments
In the letter sent to the European Commission, the PSOE summarizes the position expressed by the PP and compiles news from different media that largely contradict the arguments of Feijóo’s party against Sánchez’s territorial policy. Furthermore, it highlights that Feijóo recognizes the existence of a serious political conflict in Catalonia and shows openness towards reconciliation. It is also mentioned that the PP evaluated the viability of an amnesty law within the framework of the negotiations with Junts per Catalunya. Likewise, it is highlighted that Feijóo recognizes the difficulty of proving that Carles Puigdemont has committed terrorist crimes, despite the PP’s attempts to link the independence process with terrorism.
The PSOE mentions the conversations between the PP and Junts per Catalunya
The PSOE points out that Feijóo’s position has as a precedent the conversations that PP leaders held with members of Junts per Catalunya last August. These conversations were aimed at forming the Congress Board and, subsequently, trying to form a parliamentary majority to invest Feijóo as President of the Government. However, these conversations did not come to fruition and Carles Puigdemont threatened to reveal their content in a recently published letter.
In summary, the PSOE informs the European Commission about Feijóo’s change of position in relation to Catalonia, highlighting his openness towards reconciliation and the possibility of a conditional pardon for Carles Puigdemont. In addition, it summarizes the PP’s position and compiles news that contradicts its arguments. He also mentions the conversations between the PP and Junts per Catalunya as a precedent for this new position by Feijóo.
