Summer Driving and Fog

Although summer is not commonly associated with foggy conditions, it is a season when many people increase their time behind the wheel. Especially those who are not used to driving. In these situations, driving errors frequently occur. Among the most common problems are those related to the improper use of the vehicle’s lighting systems.

Errors in the Use of Lighting

Actions such as activating the high beams without need or using the fog lights in inappropriate situations are typical errors. Both cases can result in sanctions. It is crucial to understand in which situations the incorrect use of these lights is prohibited to avoid fines.

Regulations and Sanctions

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) establishes that fog lights must be used during conditions of reduced visibility, such as in the event of heavy rain, dense fog or snowfall. If these regulations are not respected, the fine can reach 200 euros, although points on the driving license are not penalized. Likewise, not only those who do not use the lights when obligated are punished, but also those who use them incorrectly.

When to Use Fog Lights

It is essential to know when the use of fog lights is critical. Its use is recommended when visibility is reduced to less than 20 meters, which means that the vision of the vehicle in front may be seriously affected.

The Importance of Fog Lights

Despite their name, fog lights don’t just have the function of illuminating the road. Its main objective is to increase the visibility of the vehicle for other drivers. The rear fog lights, which are located closer to the ground, are especially valuable to be seen. On the other hand, front fog lights are used in low visibility conditions to illuminate the road without dazzling other drivers.

Alternatives and Use of High Lights

High beams are useful at night, especially on poorly lit roads and when there is no traffic. If you do not have fog lights, the DGT allows the use of low beams as an alternative. All of these elements are essential for safe driving in adverse conditions.
