Carles Puigdemont does not give up

Despite the victory of the PSC in the parliamentary elections, Carles Puigdemont is not throwing in the towel. From Algiers, the Junts candidate has announced his intention to present his candidacy for the presidency of the Generalitat. Despite acknowledging that he is still far from an agreement, Puigdemont has said that he has already started contacts to build a majority and form a coherent government with strong leadership.

The need for an independence majority

Puigdemont has emphasized that, in order to defeat Salvador Illa, the support of pro-independence deputies will be necessary. In addition to the votes in favor of the PP, Puigdemont has indicated that he will also need, at the very least, Vox’s abstention. This situation contradicts the agreement not to use the votes of the far-right, but Puigdemont has stated that they are in a position to form a coherent government despite this contradiction.

The first step: an agreement on the Bureau of the Parliament

The first step for Puigdemont will be to reach an agreement on the Bureau of the Parliament. Together, he wants to assert his relative majority and is looking for the Bureau to reflect this situation. This will be fundamental for the formation of the government and to achieve the goals of independence.

Negotiations in progress

Puigdemont has stated that he has not yet started formal negotiations, but has already maintained the first contacts with the general secretary, Marta Rovira. However, he has made it clear that he is ready to stand for the investiture as president and that he has the possibility of having more votes in favor than against. He emphasized the importance of a coherent majority with strong leadership to achieve the goals of independence.

The challenge of forming a government in a complex context

Puigdemont has recognized that the formation of a pro-independence government in a context without an absolute majority will be a challenge. With the loss of deputies from the ERC and the CUP, the pro-independence majority in Parliament has been reduced. This will condition the strategy of the sovereign forces in the coming years. Despite this, Puigdemont has reiterated his commitment to restore unity and work to achieve the goals of independence.
