Pere Aragonès will not repeat as a candidate
The candidate for the 12-M, Pere Aragonès, has announced that he will leave the first political line and will not repeat as head of the ERC list in future elections. This decision has been confirmed by ACN sources. Aragonès, however, will hold the presidency of the Government until a new investiture.
Doubts about the amnesty in Calabria
In Calabria, there are doubts about whether Oriol Junqueras, president of ERC, will be granted amnesty in the autumn, when the elections will be repeated. Despite this, Junqueras has expressed his intention to be the party’s candidate again. If he cannot present himself, ERC will have to look for a new head of the list to face the new elections.
Changes in the structure of the party
With the changes in ERC’s leadership, questions are being raised about the party’s strategy. Since 2017, ERC has had two clear leaders, with Oriol Junqueras as president and Pere Aragonès as national coordinator. With the decision of Aragonès to leave the first political line, the party will have to look for new leaders to face the future.
Junqueras and his intention to continue
Oriol Junqueras wants to keep the presidency of ERC and continue working for the country. Despite this, the general secretary of the party, Marta Rovira, is betting on a leisurely transition to the leadership. This difference of opinion could lead to a change of leadership at ERC.
The electoral results and the need for relief
The electoral results of the last few years and the defeat of ERC in the last elections mean that there is a need to replace the leadership of the party. Marta Rovira is betting on a change of cycle and the possibility that both Junqueras and herself leave the ERC dome.
Responsibility for electoral results
Oriol Junqueras is not considered responsible for the electoral results of ERC. However, there are three elections in which the party has lost support. This does not prevent Junqueras from wanting to continue leading ERC once he is granted amnesty.
