The PP and the Investiture of Salvador Illa

The Popular Party (PP) has announced that it will not support an eventual investiture of Salvador Illa as president of the Generalitat. The general secretary of the popular Catalans, Santi Rodríguez, has stated that this decision is due to the fact that they consider that Salvador Illa ‘is not to be trusted’ and that they do not see any other political force with options to govern. In addition, Rodríguez has expressed that he sees ‘practically impossible’ an abstention in favor of a government of the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC).

Singular Financing and Positioning of the PP

Regarding the ‘single funding’ proposal put forward by Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) and supported by Pedro Sánchez, the PP defends the improvement of funding, but rejects that Catalonia has privileges compared to other autonomous communities. Santi Rodríguez has expressed his opposition to this proposal, stating that they do not agree with the idea that Catalonia should have a different financing system from the rest of the communities.

Reactions of Carles Puigdemont

On the other hand, Carles Puigdemont has harshly criticized Pedro Sánchez’s offer to ERC, accusing them of ‘blackmail’ in order to secure the investiture of Salvador Illa. Puigdemont has raised several questions about this offer and has warned that it will be necessary to observe the budget execution in detail if he wants to have the support of his party in the next State budgets.

Dialogue with Parties and Positions of the PP

Santi Rodríguez pointed out that, although they always try to establish channels of dialogue, at the moment they consider it impossible to negotiate with Junts per Catalunya. Regarding a possible return of Carles Puigdemont for an investiture debate, Rodríguez has stated that he does not believe it and that he considers that Puigdemont ‘has been deceiving the majority of Catalans for many years’.
