Marta Rovira will not run for re-election
Esquerra Republicana (ERC) faces important changes after the negative results of the last elections. One of the key figures who will leave the political front line is Marta Rovira, current general secretary of the party. In a letter published on social networks, Rovira has announced that he will not run for re-election. This decision comes after the celebration of the ERC executive, where Rovira has set out the reasons that have led him to take this step.
A cycle change within the party
The main reason that Rovira highlighted in his letter is the need for a cycle change within ERC. After 12 years in office, Rovira believes it is time to pass the baton to new leaders who bring a fresh and renewed vision to the party. This cycle change also involves the departure of Oriol Junqueras from the presidency of ERC, after four hours of internal meeting to take this decision.
A step to the side for self-determination
Rovira expresses in his letter his conviction that it is time to pass the baton to new leaders who will continue to work on the road to self-determination. According to Rovira, the bad results of the elections have accelerated this decision, since he considers that structural changes are needed in the party to achieve the republican goals. In this sense, Rovira asks that ERC continue to be a strategic actor to guarantee the progress of the country.
A calm relief without populism
In his letter, Rovira asks his replacements to restore ERC’s pioneering leadership and to avoid falling into messianic leadership or emotional populism. Rovira wants the party to remain a strategic actor and to remain firm in the defense of republican values without falling into demagoguery. In addition, Rovira remembers that she has been in exile since 2018 and hopes to be able to return when amnesty can be applied to her and she is not accused of terrorism.
Junqueras leaves the presidency temporarily
In addition to Rovira’s announcement, Oriol Junqueras has also announced that he will temporarily leave the presidency of ERC after the European elections. Junqueras will open a process of reflection and active listening before deciding on his future. The party is scheduled to hold an extraordinary congress on November 30, where Junqueras intends to run for re-election. However, Rovira has managed to get Junqueras to leave the position, even if it is temporarily, after a meeting of more than four hours.
