Introduce us
Do you want to cut the cheeses at home? These are the most relevant utensils you need.
In the vast gastronomic symphony that is the kitchen, utensils play the role of indispensable instruments. They are our lungs for breathing. Just as an orchestra conductor needs a wide range of instruments to create a harmonious melody, a skilled cook requires a variety of utensils to carry out successful culinary creations. From the simple wooden spoon to the complex food processor, each utensil has a specific purpose and contributes significantly to the cooking process.
Utensils for cutting cheese
When we move into a new house, it is really a major headache the whole list of things that we have to remember that are relevant to the kitchen. What if the elements to make a cake, purees, recipes in the oven… or prepare cheeses at home. The variety of utensils in the kitchen not only makes the cook’s job easier, but also influences the quality and flavor of the final dishes. That’s why this week the co-owner of the Llet Crua cheese shop, Xevi Miró, tells us all the tools we need to have at home to cut cheese.
Knives for cutting cheese
There are many types of knives for cutting cheeses according to their weight, density or size. “You don’t need to use them all, but the ones we have, at least a couple, should be well sharpened,” says Miró. The first knife he shows us in the video is a small one with a double point at the end and hollow spaces inside. “It is used for soft cheeses and the empty spaces in the middle of the knife prevent it from sticking with the utensil. As well as the spikes at the end are so that the slices of cheese can be distributed among the diners.”
When thinking about cutting hard cheeses, we will also consider the ratio. “If it were the case that we are faced with a huge beast of cheese, you need to have a knife that exceeds the diameter of the cheese to be able to cut it whole and in one go, thus avoiding damaging it,” explains the co-owner of Raw Milk. At home, however, the cheeses we buy or that come to us never have these sizes. Then with knives like the ones you can see in the photo below, that’s enough.
Other tools for cutting cheese
But there are many other tools beyond knives. The next item that appears in the video is a kind of spatula, the thing we put on the fire when we make a raclette, which we use to make very fine cuts on hard cheeses when what we want to do is taste just a small bite. We continue with the spatula-style tools, but in this case more pointed and metallic. This tool is useful exclusively for Parmesans. And, finally, if what we want is to grate the cheese, it is very important to do it minutes before eating the dish because otherwise, as the minutes go by, it loses its taste and original flavor.
