Stagnation in the female presence
A recent analysis carried out by the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia has revealed that, despite progress, the representation of women in TV3 news has begun to slow down. Laura Pinyol, CAC councilor in charge of gender issues, has stated that this study shows a stagnation that is around 30% of female participation. Even in the political sphere, which normally presents more positive figures, they are influenced by the electoral context. Despite the obligation to have equal lists, a disproportion continues to be seen between the presence of men and women as candidates.
Traditional roles in information
The report also shows that women are usually present in areas more associated with the private environment, such as education or health. However, their representation is quite scarce in areas such as sports and issues related to security and defense. Laura Pinyol has pointed out that, although progress has been gradual and encouraging, it is essential to continue working on decisions that eliminate this gender bias, since the current panorama still leaves much to be desired in terms of equitable representation.
Evaluation initiative in the Mediterranean area
The CAC has prepared this report entitled ‘Women in information’ at the request of the Mediterranean Network of Regulatory Authorities, which consists of 27 regulators in the region. This platform carries out comparative studies on various aspects, including gender stereotypes present in advertising and the treatment of gender violence, as well as equality in the field of sports programming. The evaluation focuses on the analysis of female representation in the information of the main public channels in the respective territories.
Persistent inequalities in representation
The report also reveals that, beyond the low numerical presence of women in the news, they usually appear as occasional voices and with less public recognition compared to men. On the other hand, in sports, women are often seen only as players, while leadership and strategy positions are occupied almost exclusively by men. In terms of age, it is notable that young women are represented twice as much as their male contemporaries, but their visibility is considerably reduced among older women, who provide valuable life experiences that could enrich the current narrative.
