The Community of Madrid is awarded for its health management

The Community of Madrid, led by President Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has been awarded the ‘special award for health management’ in the 13th edition of the ‘ATuSalud’ awards, awarded by the newspaper La Razón. This recognition highlights the work carried out by Madrid in the field of health and has been received on behalf of all Madrid residents.

In her acceptance speech, Ayuso defended the collaboration between public and private healthcare, stating that this collaboration works in Madrid and should not be questioned. She also highlighted that Madrid has one of the best healthcare systems in Spain and the world.

Reactions and criticism on social networks

After the announcement of the award, social networks have been filled with criticism and jokes regarding the management of the covid-19 pandemic in Madrid. Many users have recalled the problems in nursing homes and have questioned the decision to grant this recognition.

Despite the criticism, Ayuso has reiterated that Madrid has excellent healthcare and has defended its management during the pandemic, arguing that the decisions made were necessary given the circumstances.

Research on management in Madrid’s nursing homes

A citizen commission has concluded that during the covid-19 pandemic there was an excess of mortality in Madrid residences. This commission has estimated that 4,000 lives could have been saved if discriminatory criteria had not been applied in the referral of patients to hospitals.

The investigation was based on official data, reports from public and civil society organisations, court rulings and testimonies from relatives and health professionals. The commission noted that referrals of patients from nursing homes to hospitals were restricted using discriminatory criteria.

Ayuso has defended his management and argued that, given the circumstances, the decisions made were appropriate.
