The candidate of the commons in the European elections

Jaume Asens, the candidate of the Commons in the European elections of 9-J, considers it important to give ERC time so that it can reflect on the result of 12-M. According to Asens, Republicans are in a moment of introspection. In an interview with La Xarxa, Asens is convinced that ERC will make a decision based on hearing the results of the elections and trying to find points of understanding with the left-wing forces. According to him, the only options are a progressive government or a repeat election.

Fight the extreme right

Ahead of the European elections, Jaume Asens highlights the importance of fighting against the rise of the extreme right. He warns that if the right and the far right win, hard-won rights will be jeopardized.

The importance of PSC

Asens points out that the electoral arithmetic shows that the votes of ERC and Junts per Catalunya are not enough to achieve an absolute majority. Therefore, they need the support of the PSC. However, the PSC has already announced that it will not give its votes either actively or passively.

Two projects in dispute

In relation to the European elections, Asens points out that there are two projects at stake. On the one hand, there is the project of neoliberal policies that prioritize cuts to save banks and multinationals. On the other hand, there is the project that seeks to leave no one behind and create social protection networks.

The commons ask the PSC not to agree with Junts

The commons urge Salvador Illa, leader of the PSC and winner of the Catalan elections, to definitively reject a pact with Junts for the investiture. Joan Mena, spokesman for Catalonia in Commons, asks Illa to follow the same line as Carles Puigdemont, who has already rejected this option. Mena emphasizes that only a progressive government can guarantee stability in Catalonia.

The priority: a progressive government

The priority of the commons is to get a progressive government in Catalonia. However, they do not rule out supporting the investiture without becoming part of the government. They emphasize that there are several formulas to achieve stability, but their first choice is a left-wing government.
